Infinite substructure lattices of models of Peano Arithmetic.James H. Schmerl - 2010 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 75 (4):1366-1382.
Bounded lattices (that is lattices that are both lower bounded and upper bounded) form a large class of lattices that include all distributive lattices, many nondistributive finite lattices such as the pentagon lattice N₅, and all lattices in any variety generated by a finite bounded lattice. Extending a theorem of Paris for distributive lattices, we prove that if L is an ℵ₀-algebraic bounded lattice, then every countable nonstandard model of Peano Arithmetic has a cofinal elementary extension such that (...)

The Search for the Legacy of the USPHS Syphilis Study at Tuskegee is a collection of essays from experts in a variety of fields seeking to redefine the legacy of the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The essayists place the legacy of the study within the evolution of racial and ethnic relations in the United States. Contributors include two leading historians on the study, two former United States Surgeons General, and other prominent scholars from a wide range of fields.

    Nondiversity in substructures.James H. Schmerl - 2008 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 73 (1):193-211.
For a model M of Peano Arithmetic, let Lt(M) be the lattice of its elementary substructures, and let Lt⁺(M) be the equivalenced lattice (Lt(M), ≅M), where ≅M is the equivalence relation of isomorphism on Lt(M). It is known that Lt⁺(M) is always a reasonable equivalenced lattice. Theorem. Let L be a finite distributive lattice and let (L,E) be reasonable. If M₀ is a nonstandard prime model of PA, then M₀ has a confinal extension M such that Lt⁺(M) ≅ (L,E). A (...)

    Law, Liberty, and Morality.H. L. A. Hart - 1963 - Stanford University Press.
This incisive book deals with the use of the criminal law to enforce morality, in particular sexual morality, a subject of particular interest and importance since the publication of the Wolfenden Report in 1957. Professor Hart first considers John Stuart Mill's famous declaration: "The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community is to prevent harm to others." During the last hundred years this doctrine has twice been sharply challenged by two great (...)

    Doing philosophy historically.Peter H. Hare (ed.) - 1988 - Buffalo, N.Y.: Prometheus Books.
Can original philosophy be done while simultaneously engaging in the history of philosophy? Such a possibility is questioned by analytic philosophers who contend that history contaminates good philosophy, and by historians of philosophy who insist that theoretical predecessors cannot be ignored. Believing that both camps are misguided, the contributors to this book present a case for historical philosophy as a valuable enterprise. The contributors include: Todd L. Adams, Lilli Alanen, Jos? Bernardete, Jonathan Bennett, John I. Biro, Phillip Cummins, Georges Dicker, (...)

Cosmides, Wason, and Johnson-Laird, among others, have suggested evidence that reasoning abilities tend to be domain specific, insofar as humans do not appear to acquire capacities for logical reasoning that are applicable across different contexts. Unfortunately, the significance of these findings depends upon the specific variety of logical reasoning under consideration. Indeed, there seem to be at least three grounds for doubting such conclusions, since: (1) tests of reasoning involving the use of material conditionals may not be appropriate for representing (...)

This paper addresses a significant gap in the conceptualization of business ethics within different cultural influences. Though theoretical models of business ethics have recognized the importance of culture in ethical decision-making, few have examinedhow this influences ethical decision-making. Therefore, this paper develops propositions concerning the influence of various cultural dimensions on ethical decision-making using Hofstede''s typology.

Substructure lattices and almost minimal end extensions of models of Peano arithmetic.James H. Schmerl - 2004 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 50 (6):533-539.
This paper concerns intermediate structure lattices Lt, where [MATHEMATICAL SCRIPT CAPITAL N] is an almost minimal elementary end extension of the model ℳ of Peano Arithmetic. For the purposes of this abstract only, let us say that ℳ attains L if L ≅ Lt for some almost minimal elementary end extension of [MATHEMATICAL SCRIPT CAPITAL N]. If T is a completion of PA and L is a finite lattice, then: If some model of T attains L, then every countable model (...)

  21. Kant and the Question of Theology.Chris L. Firestone, Nathan A. Jacobs & James H. Joiner (eds.) - 2017 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
God is a problematic idea in Kant's terms, but many scholars continue to be interested in Kantian theories of religion and the issues that they raise. In these new essays, scholars both within and outside Kant studies analyse Kant's writings and his claims about natural, philosophical, and revealed theology. Topics debated include arguments for the existence of God, natural theology, redemption, divine action, miracles, revelation, and life after death. The volume includes careful examination of key Kantian texts alongside discussion of (...)

It is always possible to construct a real function φ, given random quantities X and Y with continuous distribution functions F and G, respectively, in such a way that φ(X) and φ(Y), also random quantities, have both the same distribution function, say H. This result of De Finetti introduces an alternative way to somehow describe the `opinion' of a group of experts about a continuous random quantity by the construction of Fields of coincidence of opinions (FCO). As scientific and engineering efforts become increasingly global in nature, the need to understand differences in perceptions of research ethics issues across countries and cultures is imperative. However, investigations into the connection between nationality and ethical decision-making in the sciences have largely generated mixed results. In Study 1 of this paper, a measure of biases and compensatory strategies that could influence ethical decisions was administered. Results from this study indicated that graduate students from the United States and international graduate students (...)

Many adoptees face a number of challenges relating to separation from biological parents during the adoption process, including issues concerning identity, intimacy, attachment, and trust, as well as language and other cultural challenges. One common health challenge faced by adoptees involves lack of access to genetic-relative family health history. Lack of GRFHx represents a disadvantage due to a reduced capacity to identify diseases and recommend appropriate screening for conditions for which the adopted person may be at increased risk. In this (...)
